Cause of Diabetes / Insulin Resistance Explained with Unlimited Q/A Sessions on FB and Instagram

Hello Everyone.

I hope that you and your families are all doing very well!!

Recently, a patient and I were discussing the cause of insulin resistance and its progression to Diabetes Type II. At the end of our discussion, she mentioned to me that I should write a newsletter explaining it. I thought to myself that I already had, but then realized that I had not. "Thank you, Miss Laura!" This topic is very important to me. I feel that it is the key to unlocking our health in today's society. So, of course, I wanted to write a newsletter explaining the topic for those who are interested.  I feel that this discussion will benefit everyone, because we all know someone that needs this information to gain their health back.

Please note, I am going to put links on Facebook and Instagram for this newsletter with the goal of receiving posts / questions from everyone that reads the information. I am going to keep this Q&A open indefinitely. I can attempt to cover the topic as thoroughly as possible, however, I feel that the questions that everyone will ask will allow me to elaborate on the topic more completely. I am hoping that this will then encourage and stimulate others to generate questions and post them so that everyone can benefit from the Q&A posts.

Okay, here we go. Insulin resistance is very simply caused by the frequent overproduction of insulin and therefore the chronically elevated level of insulin throughout the body. In a normal, healthy individual, after each healthy meal—let's say eggs and a banana for breakfast—we absorb carbohydrates,as sugar, proteins and fats from that meal, and therefore, our blood sugar elevates. This causes the secretion of insulin from the pancreas, and the insulin works to lower blood sugar by allowing tissues to soak up the sugar from the circulating blood. This brings our blood sugar, as well as our insulin levels, back down to normal levels, typically within 2 hours or less. Now, let's replace the eggs and banana with a high-sugar and processed-flour cereal. This causes a massive rush of sugar into the blood from the digestive tract and causes a huge increase in insulin. If we repeat this a couple of hours later by snacking on another sugary, highly processed snack, insulin stays increased; and if we repeat this process throughout the day, insulin stays increased for the entire day. If we repeat this day after day, week after week, even month after month and year after year, the chronically increased insulin causes insulin resistance. When the body is insulin resistant, the insulin receptors do not respond to the insulin and, therefore, do not allow tissues to take up the sugar from the blood. This causes more insulin to be released, thereby perpetuating the insulin resistance. It also causes the blood sugar to be stored as triglycerides, mostly in the adipose or fatty tissue, and some in the liver. If the cycle of eating sugary, highly processed flour food is not broken, the chronically increased insulin will develop into metabolic syndrome and, if it goes on long enough, will become diagnosed Type 2 diabetes. This is a very simplified version of what takes place to cause the onset of insulin resistance, leading to metabolic syndrome, and the progression to Type 2 diabetes.

Before we move on to treatment, I feel that it is very important to discuss this condition within a specific portion of our population, the young people.  I would guess that when most people hear about someone with insulin resistance or Diabetes type II,  very naturally an older person comes to mind.  However, I want to discuss young people and insulin resistance, and by young people, I am including all the way down to single digit ages.  Processed flour and sugary foods grab a hold of too many children at a young age, and then tends to keep that grip for years, following a person into their twenties and later.  The scary part of this scenario is that this individual does not seem to be unhealthy, but what is taking place inside them is absolutely leading them towards declining health.  This individual’s blood work comes back fine and they are over weight, but the weight is not addressed in a proper way.  And by a proper way, I mean that the provider does not explain to the individual that the weight is an indication of an unhealthy lifestyle that is leading them to insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome, and probably diabetes type II.  Let us consider a twenty eight year old person who has adopted unhealthy eating habits of processed flour and sugary foods for most of the consumption and has been doing it for many years and has generated excess visceral adipose tissue (fatty tissue around the mid section).  The blood analysis of this individual would more than likely show a normal fasting glucose and normal cholesterol levels.  This is the case for one reason only, their young body is able to handle the unhealthy lifestyle only because it is young.  The pancreas can easily kick out plenty of insulin to maintain normal blood glucose levels and the liver is able to maintain normal cholesterol levels, simply because their body is new and functions very well, even under stressful conditions.  As this individual ages, the body is less able to perform well under the same stressful conditions, and the individual has had insulin resistance for years and now has metabolic syndrome, leading towards Diabetes.  Now, if the blood work contained a fasting insulin level assay, it would very likely show high.  This is the time to begin natural treatment for this individual, beginning with healthy eating and exercise.  The younger the person, the lower the fasting insulin, and of course the older the individual the higher the fasting insulin.  BOTH with a normal fasting glucose level.  And the most important statement in this paragraph is… let’s not forget, the increased daily level of insulin is what leads a person to developing insulin resistance and can lead to Diabetes type II. And this will happen in a young person without anyone knowing, until they are 45 and diagnosed as type II after they went to the ER with chest pain due to clogging in the arteries supplying the heart muscle.  This process begins in people as young as single digit ages.  This is happening in our society now more than in any other time of history and it needs to be addressed.  I understand that this is a touchy subject, but it is far too important to simply ignore it because we can’t “see it” happening to a young person, or their blood work comes back ok.  Please….I am highly encouraging questions and comments on the thread on FB and Instagram on all of this, it will help everyone to become more educated and aware on this topic.

So, let us consider treatment and ways to break the cycle we discussed earlier. Obviously, not eating sugary, highly processed foods can help to keep blood sugar lower and, therefore, insulin production less. The better the food choices, the lower the blood sugar and, therefore, the lower the insulin levels, causing insulin resistance to reverse and allowing insulin sensitivity to return to normal. Believe it or not, this process can happen very, very quickly.  And I mean hours to days, not months to years!! This is an example of a very natural way to treat metabolic syndrome and Type 2 diabetes. If we add some exercise, including cardiovascular training as well as resistance training for the muscles, the natural healing process occurs even more quickly. The medical approach to treatment would be to use medications to lower the blood sugar. A very commonly used medication, of course, is insulin, which we have just described as one of the main causes leading to insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome, and possibly progressing to a worsening condition of Type 2 diabetes. For example, the normal, healthy individual produces around 20 or slightly more units of insulin a day with normal, healthy meals. Someone who uses insulin as a medication may take an additional 10 to 20 units of insulin to keep their blood sugar under control. As you can see, this is doubling a normal physiological level.  And in extreme cases, which are becoming much more common in today's world, some diabetics are using an additional 100 to 200 units a day or more!!!  This type of insulin use causes diabetes type II to progress to absolutely horrible levels and devastating health issues!!

There are many more medications that are used, as well as many more natural remedies, to reverse insulin resistance and, therefore, reverse Type 2 diabetes. Natural healing really comes down to diet and exercise, and I understand these can be difficult to implement into everyone's daily activities; however, I feel that it is a very important topic to address and to answer questions that people may have.  If this condition can be identified in young people prior to it taking too firm of a hold on their health, it can more easily be reversed and their health restored.  People should have a final decade of life that was just as enjoyable as the decade prior.  Isn’t this the real purpose of stopping this condition early??!!!

I know that there will be many questions that I would have never thought people would ask me, and I feel that those questions will probably be the most helpful to everyone reading through the question-and-answer session. So again, I heavily encourage everyone to ask any and all questions that they have so that we can all benefit from the discussion.  Of course, the GLP1 and GIP medications are very well known and popular relating to this condition.  My opinion….they are some of the absolute best medications formulated, except for antibiotics.  I am certain that statement causes some of you to have questions, and I am certain that everyone has the same questions/comments, so please ask them on the FB page so that I can answer / discuss them and everyone can benefit from them.

Please, if you have any comments or questions, please go to the FB or Instagram page and leave them so that a discussion can be created.  This topic is far too important to not have the discussion.  I guarantee that there will be many people that will benefit from the open discussion!  If you have family or friends that would like to participate and/or benefit from the information, please forward them this email or guide them to the post.

I want to thank all of you for reading this.  I also want to thank all of you in advance that will take part in the FB and Instagram discussions.

And, if you are interested on 1 on 1 personal counseling on your own metabolic syndrome or Diabetes type II, please read further about my new program at the office.  Patients have had a great deal of success with it, making it very enjoyable for me.  Thanks again!

I am very excited, and pleased to announce that I am providing a new service of Metabolic Syndrome / Diabetic Counseling at McKim Chiropractic. If you are unfamiliar with that term, please consider metabolic syndrome the same as Diabetes or as having insulin resistance, as they are all the same condition. I have been fascinated with the condition for many years and have been taking in as much information that I can because I have the unbridled urge to understand the deep physiology of the condition as well as how to properly guide patients to reverse it. Metabolic syndrome and diabetes afflict many people around the globe and unfortunately seems to be on the rise. Just as unfortunate, most people that are afflicted are unsure of how to properly work their way out of the condition because they simply lack the proper guidance. I have begun counseling patients and guiding them through their journey out of metabolic syndrome and diabetes with success, not only reversing their metabolic syndrome, but teaching them along the way so that they understand the physiology of the processes taking place within their body and how to sustain this new lifestyle forever to live a longer, healthy life with better lifespan as well as health span. I am very excited to work with patients and help guide and teach them along their journey to health and longevity.

Please read a testimonial from one of my current metabolic counselling patients regarding her success that she has achieved....

"" I initially came to see Dr. Mark for help with a hip injury -- but what I received has been so much more than physical relief. During our first conversation, I mentioned I was diabetic and shared my fear of following the same path as my father, who passed away from heart disease. I told him I have too much to live for -- and Dr. Mark truly listened.

He didn't just offer sympathy. He offered a solution.

Dr. Mark asked if he could take a deeper look into my metabolic syndrome, and that one question has changed everything for me. Just six weeks into working with him, I feel like a new person. My blood sugar has stabilized. I'm not constantly sick or exhausted anymore, and I'm taking much less medication than I was before meeting with Dr. Mark. I feel alive again.

Dr. Mark is incredibly knowledgeable -- not just about chiropractic care, but about the whole person. His compassion, insight, and dedication to healing the root of the issue, not just the symptoms, has given me hope. He's not just treating me -- he's helping me love life again!

I'm beyond grateful!""

Here is how it works. Each session is on a one on one visit with patient and Dr. Mckim. Patients are equipped with a constant glucose monitor, or CGM. This is the small round disc that you see people with on the back of their upper arm. This device is measuring blood glucose or sugar levels constantly throughout the entire day and night. Patient is asked to make a very detailed daily food diary. The food diary and CGM blood sugar results are compared and very carefully reviewed by Dr. Mckim and modifications are made in the patient's dietary intake, as well as lifestyle, to help to stabilize blood sugar levels, and therefore reducing and reversing their metabolic syndrome. Patients are met with as often that is needed to make the proper changes, typically once per week for an hour or less. I feel that too many people want to take this journey to health, but are simply unsure of how to start. If you feel that you are in this position, please allow me to help guide you.

If you are interested in learning more about receiving counseling to help guide you through your journey, or simply have a question or two, please reply to this email, or contact Dr. Mckim at 8154777718. If you have a family member or friend that you feel would be interested, please forward this email to them.

Again, I am very excited to provide this new service to patients and look forward to speaking to everyone that is interested in using it to improve their health and longevity.

Have a great day.
